Māhealani Freitas – 2nd Grade Teacher, Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeo

Why did you choose Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikōlani?

I made the decision to go to college to learn how to speak Hawaiian. I chose to attend college at Ka Haka ʻUla ʻO Keʻelikōlani because of their rigorous program that aligned with my goals, however I didn’t realize how valuable this program was until I graduated. Today, I am a Hawaiian language speaker that is revitalizing the language of my ancestors. The Hawaiian language, perspective, cultural practices, and more are thriving in my family. There are a number of resourceful teachers in this program that teach different cultural practices through the Hawaiian language to show it living throughout different scenarios. There are many hands-on courses, courses that analyze recordings of native Hawaiian elders, and so much more. The Hawaiian language lives in Ka Haka ʻUla ʻO Keʻelikōlani so it can thrive in every other place.
