Kekailiko Medeiros – Assistant Curriculum Developer, Hale Kuamoʻo

Why did you choose Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikōlani?

As a graduate from Ke Kula ʻO Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu, I am passionate about seeking higher level knowledge relating to Hawaiian language and culture. As a member of the Kuʻikahi and Aukahi that seeks to revitalize the Hawaiian language, it is my responsibility to take what I have learned and pass it down to the next generation, and Ka Haka ʻUla is a great route to take in order to fulfill that goal.

What is the value of Ka Haka ʻUla to you?

Going to Ka Haka ʻUla is beneficial in the same sense as attending any establishment that supplies Hawaiian knowledge. There are not much differences because we all have the same goal which is to revitalize the Hawaiian language and knowledge. Like other establishments, there are highly intelligent professors, teachers and staff members around campus always willing to share the knowledge that have been gained.

How did you grow as a person and how was your life impacted because of your time at Ka Haka ʻUla?

I grew at this program due to the numerous things that I have learned and the numerous responsibilities that I have been assigned. With that, it encouraged me to become a role model for the next generation to has a deep desire in revitalizing the Hawaiian language. As a staff member at the Hale Kuamoʻo and assigned the "hiapo" title for my classmates while attending Ka Haka ʻUla, I gained some valuable skills that are important when becoming an adult, such as being trust-worthy when assigned a responsibility or duty.
